‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Novel Tie-In Coming September, Comic To Follow

Paramount

Nice to see the ‘all hands on deck’ attitude toward the unveiling Star Trek: Discovery. Looking forward to all the new material!

Via TrekMovie.com:

In March we reported that the first Star Trek: Discovery novel tie-in was available for pre-order and titled Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours, written by David Mack. Now that CBS has set a release date for the series, Pocket Books has set the release for Desperate Hours for September 26th, the Tuesday following the premiere (September 24th).

As of now, there’s no cover or synopsis for the novel, but in an exclusive interview with TrekMovie, Mack said of the the book:

I developed it based on characters, dialogue, backstory, and situations in the upcoming series’ two-part pilot. If we’ve all done our jobs correctly, it should serve as an excellent companion piece to the two-part premiere.

Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours can be pre-ordered at Amazon in large-format paperback and  Kindle e-book. It will also be available as an unabridged audiobook at Audible and other audiobook retailers.

Discovery comic coming too

IDW is also working on a comic book tie-in to Star Trek: Discovery. It will be written by Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer with art by Tony Shasteen. We know it won’t be released in September as it wasn’t part of IDW’s  announcement of their September comics, but it could still come as soon as October. We will know more when IDW announces their October solicitations in July, or perhaps there will be something announced at San Diego Comic Con.

Star Trek: Discovery Announces Its Official Premiere Date

Paramount Pictures

This news is a big deal because the Trek franchise is listing at the moment. That’s not a criticism of Trek, just an observation. We’d like to see this do well as a win for Trek is a win for all SF fans.

Via EW: No wait, it’s for real this time!

Star Trek: Discovery has announced its long-awaited premiere date.

Trek will return to series television on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET with a special telecast on CBS (the network’s NFL football coverage will act as its lead-in). Both the premiere and the second episode will also immediately debut on the CBS All Access streaming service (so if viewers finish the premiere and want to know what happens next, they can instantly switch to All Access to find out). After that, the series be released weekly on All Access for the rest of its 15-episode run, which will be split into two parts. The first eight episodes will be made available on Sunday nights through Nov. 5, then the show will take a winter hiatus; Discovery will resume its second chapter in January 2018. Outside the U.S., the series will air on Netflix.

Star Trek: Discovery Expanding Into Bold New Territory

startrek“While Star Trek: Discovery will take us back to the classic era of Trek — ten years before The Original Series, to be exact — there’s nothing old fashioned about this new show. On the contrary, exec Bryan Fuller seems set on helming the franchise into a bold future, continuing Star Trek’s tradition of progressiveness and challenging social norms…

Going beyond the structure of one main ship and a crew of leading characters is probably the best thing for Discovery, allowing us to see multiple sides of the story. While it’s a bit early to tell for sure, some carefully placed hints are suggesting that the Discovery might not be the only ship the new show follows.

The test footage for Star Trek: Discovery certainly got everyone talking, thanks to the interesting design of the ship and the mysterious asteroid base it emerged from. But even before this came the teaser trailer, which promised “new crews”, villains, and worlds.”
